Dorothy Drees, Richard Hulley, and a special incarnation of Babaji will present their set of dance bhajans and original music at Café Paradiso, 607 W. Broadway, on Saturday, August 2nd, 2008. They have arranged and fine-tuned several new pieces since their last concert at Paradiso.
They recently played for Amma in Coralville to great reviews. Especially encouraging were the excited Indian guys who raved about the energy and pronunciation and wanted more.
Many of the songs may be described as rock bhajans – up-tempo and musically interesting treatments of traditional Indian devotional songs. Others are stories describing life experiences within the spiritual subculture. Ted Clancy is on bass, Richard Hulley is on guitar, and Dorothy Drees plays keyboard and air theramin.
All are smooth, tightly arranged pop-rock items with clean vocal harmonies. Influences include Steely Dan, the British invasion, Miles Davis, techno, and 50’s sci-fi soundtracks.
They will begin their 45 minute set promptly at 8:30 PM. Please plan to arrive by 8:15 so as to enjoy the whole show. Tickets are $5.00 at the door, $3.00/students.
